Preanalytic Variation and Its Impact on Routine and Advanced Staining Techniques, 3 CEUs

As laboratories continue to perform and compete for business, and as new advances are made in the histology field and advanced staining, College of American Pathology (CAP) and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) will continue to require more and more standardization. Are you and your lab ready for all these Changes? Lets take a look at your processes and how standardization could change those in the future. In this session we'll discuss the top sources of variation in pre-analytical processes and improvements to work toward standardization. These areas will include Collection and Handling, Fixation, Tissue Processing, Post Processing Actions (Embedding, Microtomy, slide drying, Storage of cut slides and paraffin blocks). The areas and changes to them will affect the testing that follows, i.e. H&E, Special Stains, IHC and ISH. Participants will be engaged in the discussion and receive information on the latest attempts to bring standardization to Anatomic Pathology.

Surgical Pathology Dissection, A HistoTechs guide to Grossing (Live Web Presentation), 1 CEU

The gross room is where specimens are accessioned into the histology laboratory, and the role of the histotechnician in this process is critical for the macroscopic analysis of tissues. Traditionally the work involved accessioning specimens into the LIS system, cassette preparation, ordering specimens, stocking, and clean-up. More and more these roles are expanding, with some hospitals employing histotechnologists for the gross analysis and preparation of specimens for histology. This webinar will review the fundamentals of gross dissection such as orientation, dissection, marking, description, and sampling. We will also examine the role of the pathologist, pathology assistant, and histotechnologist in this evolving area of the laboratory. Safety concerns in the gross room will be discussed, as well as requisitions, considerations for different tissue types, and the purpose of a slide index.

A message from our ASH President

Good evening ASH members,

You never know what to do or say when you lose someone you work or care about so suddenly. The Histology family lost 2 beautiful people since last Friday.

Wanda Platt Jones was the wife of Lamar Jones, who if some of you remember, came 3 years ago and gave presentations at our Meeting in Sedona. Wanda was awarded NSH Histotechnologist of the Year in 2013 in Rhode Island. She worked in the IHC Department at Emory Healthcare before retirement. Wanda was a beautiful lady, who touched a lot of hearts with her kindness and who was always willing to help anyone who asked. Again, if you would like to donate to the family, you may do so by calling Harlan @ (205)425-2424.

Beth Keyer suddenly passed this past weekend. She was only 42 yr old. Beth was a graduate of the Pima Community College Histotechnology Program and was employed at Ventana Medical Systems. She loved animals and had a quiet and gentle nature. She will be sorely missed. Her memorial service will be held at Evergreen Mortuary, 3015 N Oracle Rd, Tucson AZ on Tuesday, Jan 31st at 2 pm. Alll are welcome to attend. Donations in her honor should be directed to the Humane Society of Southern AZ

Please keep these 2 families in your thoughts and prayers for Beth and Wanda will be greatly missed but forever in our memories.
