POSITION OVERVIEW

The purpose of this position is to prepare and process tissue specimens into microscopic slides for pathologic diagnosis.

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS (This is not an all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned. List in order of importance.)

 Performs gross dissection, processes and embeds tissue specimens (constantly)  Performs microtomy on the embedded specimen to obtain thin ribbons of tissue sections and mounts sections on glass slides (constantly)  Performs routine staining and some special staining of tissue sections to prepare tissue slides for microscopic examination by the Medical Examiner (constantly)  Prepares solutions and staining agents, and disposes of used materials according to biohazard requirements (occasionally)  Maintains histology activity reports (occasionally)  Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of histology laboratory equipment (occasionally)  Performs and documents Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities and corrective actions related to equipment performance (occasionally)

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education and/or Experience: HT (ASCP) certification with Associate degree (AA) or completion of 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of college level courses including 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry with at least two years clinical histology experience.

OR: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program along with 2 years clinical histology experience and eligibility for HT (ASCP) registry with successful certification within 18 months of hire.

OR: Completion of 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of college level courses including 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry with a least two years clinical histology experience and eligibility for HT (ASCP) registry with successful certification within 18 months of hire.

Specialized Training, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:

HT or HTL (ASCP) certification or completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program along with 2 years clinical histology experience and eligibility for HT (ASCP) registry.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of Histology tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, routine staining and special staining techniques used to prepare microscopic slides for diagnosis. Knowledge of human anatomy and biology. Skill in operation and maintenance of histology equipment. Ability to maintain accurate Quality Assurance records and statistical records. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (BS) in a biological science or medical technology with HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification. 2-5 years of clinical histology experience.

Preferred Training, Certifications and/or Other Special Requirements: HT or HTL (ASCP) certification
